Gathering for World Suicide Prevention Day
A special gathering took place
on September 8, 2024, as we honoured
World Suicide Prevention Day
This year, our free event took place on Sunday, September 8
We met in the Opera Room of The Dorchester Hotel
70 Church Street, in downtown Nanaimo
Schedule
1:00 pm: Screening of Through the Shadowlands
2:15 pm: Q&A session with filmmakers Anastasia Hirst and John Fulton of Gabriola
This film explores the transformative impact of equine therapy on mental health and the deep connection between humans and horses. Originally intended to showcase the healing power of horses, the project took a personal turn when Anastasia’s father died by suicide. The film now also addresses the stigma surrounding mental health and suicide loss, illustrating how healing in community can be essential, especially after such a loss.
The new theme for World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD) 2024-2026 is
Changing the Narrative on Suicide
Our annual gathering provides a safe space for those who have lost a loved one to suicide, so that
they share their stories of loss and grief, with the hope that this will encourage others to begin
conversations about suicide in our communities.
