CIST is a communication workshop that will give caregivers the tools needed for assessing and deescalating crisis.
Please note that this workshop is not the Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training program developed by CPI.
Responding to and diffusing crisis situations, including suicide, is a vital skill for anyone embarking on a career in human services. Despite overwhelming evidence that education saves lives, formalized, research based training in crisis and suicide intervention is not usually included in care based jobs and programs. Crisis Intervention Skills Training (CIST) is a crisis and suicide intervention skill-building certificate workshop designed to help alleviate caregiver fears, and strengthen skill sets in order to best help persons at risk.
The two-day workshop is of significant interest to police and correctional staff, parents/foster parents, nurses, teachers, counsellors, social workers, youth workers, school support staff, clergy, volunteers, physicians, and other people likely to encounter persons at risk. Please note that courses held at the Crisis Society’s training facility are limited to 16 participants.
Learn crisis intervention from the professional training staff of the Crisis Society. Lyndsay Wells and Heather Owen are members of the Canadian Association for Suicide Prevention, and certified Crisis Workers through the American Association of Suicidology.
The CIST workshop will give concrete skills to help caregivers feel more comfortable. Topics covered include:
- Non-violent communication
- Active listening
- Working with our fears and biasses
- Definition of Crisis
- Crisis Intervention Model
- Boundary setting
- Statistics
- Warning signs for suicide
- How to respond to a suicidal person
- Intervention skills using an intervention model
- Networking and resources
